Located in Plymouth County, Hanover, MA is considered part of the South Shore. The South Shore consists of the following communities: Cohasset, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Hull, Kingston, Marshfield, Norwell, Pembroke, Plymouth and Scituate.

English settlers arrived in Hanover in 1649 when a bridge was built over the North River, yet it wasn’t incorporated until 1727, a little over 100 years after the Pilgrims landed. Hanover has an open town meeting form of government with a Town Manager and an elected Board of Selectmen.

Hanover was originally known for its farming, small mills and shipbuilding, later turning to the shoe industry and the invention of the first tack making machine. From 1907 to 1970, National Firework was a large firework company that manufactured civilian fireworks and also, researched, developed and manufactured US military munitions and pyrotechnics.

Hanover is a beautiful community with 1700 acres of land dedicated to open space with 12 walking trails. There is an organization called Hanover Trail Watch which consists of a group of volunteers who regularly use the Hanover trail system and work to promote safe trail use.

The Hanover Mall, with over 80 retail stores, was recently sold to a new real estate partner who will be looking at transforming the mall into mixed-use space offering retail, office space and assisted living. Route 53 in Hanover is seeing a surge in store openings and construction with the expansion of The University Sports Complex, Planet Fitness, Tractor Supply Company and a new Mercedes-Benz dealership.

The town is now called home to almost 14,450 residents. Estimated median household income is $98,750. Median home price is $447,000. For fiscal year 2017, the real estate tax rate for Hanover is $16.52 for residential and $17.32 for commercial and industrial properties.
